Description

Plants for sale are Bletilla Ochracea “Chinese Butterfly”. Each Bletilla I offer is Hybridized and grown from tissue cultures to be a disease free exact replica of the mother plant. Bletilla Ochracea can be grown in all 50 states. Can be planted in the home landscape or in containers. Plants are currently growing at between 5-16″ quick growers. Plant sends up prolific flowering spikes up to 3’ and covered in beautiful glowing blooms, Bletilla is one of my favorite orchids hands down. Hardiness Zone 6 – 10. How to grow and care for Bletilla Orchids in the landscape: A deciduous terrestrial wild orchid commonly called the chinese orchid or the hardy orchid is well suited to woodland gardens, with blossoms that resemble little Cattleyas opening in June and July. The clusters of long-lasting flowers on slender stems and the deeply veined, Iris-like leaves arise from tuber-shaped rootstocks (corm-like pseudobulbs). This small genus is represented in cultivation by only three species and their varieties, Bletillas striata, formosana, and ochracea. Light/Watering planting instructions: Full sun to partial shade, protected from afternoon sun. Water thoroughly after planting and give new plants a good soaking once a week during summer, unless rainfall is plentiful (more than 1 inch per week). Established plants can generally get by on less water, but most grow best if the soil remains evenly moist. Please note that more is not better. When in doubt, don’t water. Keep dry in winter while plants are dormant.Bletilla seeds are nodescript seeds small in size. As long as the bletillas are growing hardy weed control wount be a problem. Site selection and preparation: When choosing a site full sun is preferable with afternoon shade. Rich loose top soil is prefered as lond as it drains freely. Ph requirements are 5.6-7.5 Plant spacing: Plants should be spaced 12″ apart in any fashion desired. Try to picture the layout before you start. Remember these things will bloom all summer long in most areas. Fertilizer/Soil and pH: Grow in moist, well-drained soil rich in humus. We recommend against fertilizing at planting time and during the first growing season in your garden. Plants need time to settle in before being pushed to grow. Most established plants grow best if fertilized with a light hand. We fertilize perennials just once–in early spring–with a light but even coverage of a balanced, granular fertilizer (such 10-10-10 or an organic fertilizer). If a concentrated, water-soluble fertilizer is used, please follow the manufacturers’ recommendations carefully. Continuing Care: Easy to grow, Bletilla will spread to form generous clumps. For best flowering, give it a period at or near freezing; mulch during winter. Where Bletilla is not winter hardy (Zone 5 and colder), it can be grown in containers and brought indoors. Pests and diseases: Pests and dieeases are few and far between if using irrigation/drip irrigation it is better to keep evenly moist. Bletilla is commonly referred to as a lily but its not in the same genus. Florida Hill Nursery is your internet source for buying rare plants and fruit trees.
