Plants for sale are between 5-16″ tall. Alocasia Nigra has wide leaves that are dark green on their surface and a metallic black color on the underside with edges that are ruffled and indented plants start out green and turn black with time. Plants reach 3-5′ in height. Huge elephant-ear type leaves which normally point to the heavens add lots of focal impact in the tropical garden and summer patio containers; native to tropical S. and S.E. Asia, these great plants sway and ‘sing’ a special song in the warm, mid-late summer breezes; tall. We recommend using only Bio Spectrum organic Fertilizer located in our store. Soil requirements and planting instructions

  • 50 percent potting soil;
  • 20 percent peat moss;
  • 20 percent orchid bark with charcoal;
  • 10 percent shredded sphagnum moss and a handful of perlite.
Place this mixture in a pots, beds or garden and plant your alocasia.
Proper site preparation ensures years of growth and once established they will not require weed control. Soil Ph should be around 5.6-7.0

Plant Care

If using drip irrigation allow soil to dry slightly between watering. Do not over water any members of the alocasia family.

Light Conditions

When making a site selection keep your plant in an area that has bright indirect light, but not direct sunlight.

Fertilizer

Feed this heavy feeder every three weeks during the warmer months with a one half-strength fertilizer with a balanced N-P-K ratio or 20-20-20.

Pests and Disease

Pests or diseases are few and far between. When planting to avoid crown rot, stem rot and other fungal diseases keep your alocasia fairly dry.
Alocasia are also referred to as Giant taro, Ape plant, Elephant Ear, Ape flower, Elephant’s Ear Plant, Night-scented Lily, New Guinea Shield, and Taro. Colocasia are generally grown from side shoots vs seeds. There are hundreds of varieties of Alocasia.  Plants will produce large fragrant flowers.
