Colocasia gigantea is an outrageous, fast growing tropical landscape plant well worth growing for the looks of fascination and delight. In a single season, a well fed and watered 4” pot will grow into a monster plant reaching 6-10’ tall with large rounded, powdery green leaves that look like giant elephant ears.

Use as a fast growing annual in your summer garden for a dramatic tropical effect. In the winter, dig the tubers and place in the cellar or prune the plant and bring inside. Colocasia gigantea is also called ‘Giant Taro’ since the starchy tubers are eaten in some parts of the world.

Ships to the continental United States only. We recommend using Bio Spectrum organic fertilizer located in our store. Ships to the continental United States only.

Colocasia soil requirements and planting instructions

Mix together the following:
  • 50 percent potting soil;
  • 20 percent peat moss;
  • 20 percent orchid bark with charcoal;
  • 10 percent shredded sphagnum moss and a handful of perlite.
    Place this mixture in a pots, beds or garden and plant your Colocasia. Proper site preparation ensures years of growth and once established they will not require weed control. Soil Ph should be around 5.6-7.0.

Light conditions

    When making a site selection keep your plant in an area that has bright indirect light, but not direct sunlight.

Water and Fertilizer

    If using drip irrigation allow soil to dry slightly between watering. Do not over water any members of the Colocasia family. Add fertilizer to this heavy feeder every three weeks during the warmer months with a one half-strength fertilizer with a balanced N-P-K ratio or 20-20-20.

Pests and Disease

    Pests or diseases are few and far between. When planting to avoid crown rot, stem rot and other fungal diseases keep your Colocasia fairly dry.
