Elephant Ears Colocasia Black Magic is one of the most spectacular Colocasia plants ever introduced. Its dusty solid purple-black leaves grow up to 2 feet long. Black Magic grows to a giant clump up to 5-6 feet tall with an equally wide spread. Prefers sun to partial shade. Elephant Ear varieties are hardy in zones 7-10 as perennials and suitable in zones 4-6 as annuals.

They are popular as annuals due to their rapid growth – colocasia makes a dramatic impact to the landscape within just one season.

How to grow Colocasia Black Magic

Colocasia Black Magic soil requirements and planting instructions

Mix together the following:
  • 50 percent potting soil;
  • 20 percent peat moss;
  • 20 percent orchid bark with charcoal;
  • 10 percent shredded sphagnum moss and a handful of perlite.
    Then, place this mixture in a pots, beds or garden and plant your Colocasia. Proper site preparation ensures years of growth and once established they will not require weed control. Soil Ph should be around 5.6-7.0.

Light conditions

    When making a site selection keep your plants in an area that has bright indirect light, but not direct sunlight.

Water and Fertilizer

    If using drip irrigation allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. However, do not over water any members of the Colocasia family. Add fertilizer to this heavy feeder every three weeks during the warmer months We recommend using Bio Spectrum organic fertilizer.

Pests and Disease

    Pests or diseases are few and far between. When planting to avoid crown rot, stem rot and other fungal diseases keep your Colocasia fairly dry.

Additional Information

Colocasia are also referred to as Giant taro, Ape plant, Elephant Ear, Ape flower, Elephant’s Ear Plant, Night-scented Lily, New Guinea Shield, and Taro. Plants will produce large fragrant flowers. There are hundreds of varieties of Colocasia.
