As with all my plants Black Stem Elephant Ear plants are grown from tissue culture to be exact disease free copies of the mother plant. Plants for sale are between 5-16″ they grow fast. Black Stem Elephant Ear is an aroid grown all over the tropics as a food plant. It is very variable but typically a plant with tuberous rhizomes and elegant leaves on a long petiole.

The petiole is dark purple in color and this color is extended to the veins on the underside of the leaves. People grow it in Nepal and through the Himalayan range up to northeast India. It can be found growing in forest areas close to cultivated land where the tuber is cultivated for food. Reaches 4-5 feet.

Black Stem Elephant Ear soil requirements and planting instructions

First, mix together the following:

  • 60 percent potting soil
  • 20 percent peat moss
  • 20 percent coarse sand and a handful of perlite

Then, place this mixture in a pots, beds or garden and plant your Xanthosoma Violaceum.
